El Tunco Beach—named after the Salvadoran slang word for “pig”—is one of El Salvador’s most iconic surf destinations. Its name comes from a massive boulder partially submerged off its shore. During certain seasons, its unique shape resembles that of a pig, giving the beach its distinctive nickname.Today, El Tunco is visited weekly by hundreds of local and international tourists, but it wasn’t always a buzzing hotspot. Back in the seventies and eighties, it was just a small, quiet town beside a peaceful estuary. Over time, it has transformed into a must-visit destination for surfers from around the world and for those looking to immerse themselves in the bohemian, laid-back surf culture.
Located only 7 kilometers west of El Puerto de La Libertad, El Tunco is a lively microcosm with a cosmopolitan vibe. It’s full of fun, energy, and “chiva”—a local expression used to describe good vibes, good times, or anything truly awesome
